Hardware # Forcing a CF Card, which Only Supports Removable Disk Mode, into Hard Disk Mode (2000/XP)
CF cards (e.g., Sandisk Extreme) nowadays rarely feature a Fixed Disk mode (except for expensive Transcend Industrial cards) and are recognized by Windows as Removable Disk when connected to IDE adapters – resulting in the following:
- pagefile.sys (paging file)
- UDMA mode, write cache
- hiberfil.sys (hibernation file, in my opinion negligible)
cannot be written or activated on the card.
However, for Windows 2000 and XP, there is a driver (cfadisk.sys) originally designed for Hitachi MicroDrives. This driver is installed instead of the standard disk driver of Windows. After a restart, the CF card is recognized as a Local Disk (hard drive) and no longer as Removable Disk, eliminating the mentioned limitations.

But no advantage without disadvantage: With the driver (at least under Windows, because Linux doesn't care what it runs on), you can only have one visible partition on the CF drive. It is recommended to perform any additional partitioning only with GPARTED (Boot CD).
